My sister and I had a truly amazing time on the Ngana Julaymba Dungay tour with our tour guide Harry. We learnt so much about the Kuku Yalanji People and their rich language, culture and land. We had so much fun learning to spear mud crab and eating delicious damper. We loved learning about all the bush food and medicine and enjoying trying some of them. The tour ended with a swim the Mossman Gorge which was incredible. I highly recommend this tour and connecting with and learning about the Kuku Yalanji People and their land.
We had a fantastic half-day tour with Harry and his guide-in-training son. It was our first day of our trip, so it was a great to begin with an understanding of the culture,m history, and landscape of the region. Harry was very generous with his knowledge and time, and cooked up the best dish we had in our whole trip. Also, big thanks to Corinne for being so flexible with our booking after we had to change dates due to earlier lockdowns in our city. We would definitely do a tour with Walkabout again and will be recommending to all our friends and family.
Our guides Harry and Mick were founts of knowledge about local dreamtime stories, history and landscape. They showed us traditional uses of a range of local plants - including cures for headaches, bush soap and some very tasty lemon flavoured ants! There are some haunting stories about dispossession and massacres of local people, which need to be better understood in Australia generally, but it is also great to see the resilience of the local communities, and exciting new cultural projects emerging in Kuku Yalanji country. The visit to Mossman Gorge and dip in the river at the end were superb. (We were actually three adult family members, but the Tripadvisor dropdown list below oddly doesn't offer that option!)
We had a great time with Juan and Tommy as our guides. They were full of really interesting information and happy to share with everyone in our small group and answer any questions we had. Had a lot of fun trying to spear mud crabs and then a great swim in Mossman Gorge. Couldn't recommend these guys enough.
We had a fabulous time on our half day cultural tour, learned heaps of fascinating stuff about rainforest and reef plants & animals, bush medicines, signs from the forest about when different fruits or animals are ready to eat, how to throw a traditional spear, prepare a turtle to eat, when to hunt for crabs, when it’s not safe to swim, and lots of interesting culture about naming children, family culture, taking a partner, language, history… you name it, we learned it! Our guides were very down to earth, genuine, knowledgeable and interesting people. My 13 y.o. daughter and I loved our tour - it was worth every penny. Juma-nyajil, Harry and Loretta.
Juan and Harry gave us the unique opportunity to learn about and participate in the stories and practices of the Kuku Yalanji people. As an Australian interested in indigenous culture this has been my favourite Aboriginal cultural experience. There is acknowledgment of the past and losses that have resulted, but the focus is on the joy that remains in the knowledge and practices that remain intact. There is plenty of general local history and knowledge shared too. My family and I felt that Juan was inviting us into his home as a guest or extended family member. Thanks Juan. We were privileged to get this experience with you. The crab we caught with Harry, and that you cooked for us, was pretty good too. I can still taste the chilli sauce.
My partner and I went on this tour while on our honeymoon and it was absolutely awesome! Juan is an amazing guide and it was great to learn about indigenous culture from him. We were also lucky enough to be joined by Harry who took us hunting for mudcrabs (was a really awesome experience) So if you are ever in Port Douglas or Mossman make sure to book yourself a spot with Walkabout Cultural Adventures :)
Yalada! We all know how to say hello in many languages but I never knew how to say it in one of Australia’s indigenous languages. A fantastic experience. I feel like we learnt so much about the land and our Aboriginal people, all while experiencing the beautiful surrounds and having fun. Digging for pippis, spearing crab in the mangroves, eating ants and flowers, not to mention the tropical fruits and home cooked damper. Even the teenagers loved it.
